On Selection of Asanas in Yoga-Therapeutic Complex.

As a rule, people who are trying to improve their health by means of yoga-therapy lay their emphasis on some certain area of their body. One is concerned about pain in the low back and so the person tries to work thoroughly the lumbar region, other suffers from tight shoulder girdle and emerging numbness in hands, and so he starts to work with brachial zone.

Such approach to practice is not quite correct.

In fact, each body zone allocated separately is quiet relative. Its allocation is convenient first of all for the purpose of localization of disturbing symptoms. In order to develop the proper complex — either for health-improvement or the preventive one — it is important to understand that any area of human body is connected with others.

For instance, if a person is round-shouldered this will cause change in tone of his shoulder girdle muscles. Some of these muscles begin from cervical vertebrae, others – from dorsal vertebrae.

The muscle lifting the blade will be hyper-toned. It begins from the first four cervical vertebrae.

The rhomboid muscles will be also subject to hypersthenia. These ones begin from the 6th and 7th cervical, the 1st to 4th dorsal vertebrae.

The trapezoid muscle starts from the occipital bone of the skull, cervical and dorsal vertebrae, and it is attached to the bones of the shoulder girdle – the clavicle and the shoulder blade (scapula). Some fibers of this muscle (the upper part) will be contracted and shortened while its lower part will be contracted and lengthened.

The broadest muscle of back that is attached to the humerus and brings the arm to the body comes from the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, pelvic bones. Its tone will be also changed.

Since any skeletal muscle has at least two points of fixation to the backbone- the so-called muscle’s origin and insertion site — the chronic contraction shall result in reorganization of bones that the muscle is attached to. Just like in case of the above-described muscles.

Thus changing in state of the shoulder girdle muscles shall cause repositioning of the rest of skeleton bones and respectively change in tone of the majority of skeletal muscles.

Therefore in treating the problem of rounded shoulders one should develop the complex that is meant for working out not only the muscles of the shoulder girdle, but also those of all regions of the spine, pelvis area, the muscles of the upper and lower extremities.

In case one has any problematic area one should work methodically not only with this area, but with all others as well. And here we should say that most of asanas do have such potential of simultaneous engagement of several large muscle groups. An important issue here is to try their proper succession basing upon specific anatomy and physiology of each individual part of the body.

The similar mechanism of asanas effect, when we purposefully «arrange» the areas of our body, normalize the tone of individual muscles and entire muscle groups, can be called mechanical (A.G. Safronov, «Yoga: Physiology, Psychosomatics, Bioenergetics»), or biomechanical.

The algorithm of asanas’ selection and matching is studied in groups on yoga-therapy and at workshops.
